But switching Red and Adelaide leads to something far unnerving, which is that the concept of a “soul” is a luxury provided by those who have the comfort of freedom and choice.
Given the behavior we see from all the doubles-killing with abandon, showing no remorse over their actions, etc.-that would seem to hold true. We’re told earlier in the film that the doubles couldn’t reasonably function as doubles because they lacked a soul, and that for all the copying the government could do, they couldn’t replicate that one part.
Instead, we should look at the subtext of the story, and here we find the most disturbing revelation of all. The mythology of Us provides a cursory explanation of how things unfolded, but they’re not the point of the movie. This ambiguity between Christian metaphor and radically secular speculation explains the movie's divisive reputation among Christians, detailed on the website some, this may cause you to double back on the movie and wonder if all of “Adelaide’s” actions are actually in service to the doubles, but the “how” of it, as I’ve explained before, is ultimately far less interesting. If we abstract "Knowing" away from the realm of metaphor and view the story through a more literal lens, it reveals surprising similarities with the works of Erich von Däniken, the 20th-century Swiss writer famous for theorizing that ancient human religions were a result of contact with aliens. It can also be taken, however, to mean something else entirely. All in all, "Knowing'"s ending can be taken to visualize the overarching Christian belief in the saving of an elected few by a higher power. Then, there are also references to other Biblical passages, which suggest a more pick-'n'-mix approach to Christian mythology: John's separation from his son Caleb calls to mind the Matthew verse "Then shall two be in the field the one shall be taken, and the other left," and the bringing of the kids to the new, Eden-like planet could be interpreted as a Rapture, following the Revelation-like reception of the beings' whispers.
